CND also found new forms of protest, linking with the Greenham women at Easter 1983 when, instead of the more traditional march from Aldermaston, or even a march from Aldermaston to Greenham, a 14 -mile human chain was formed, linking Aldermaston and Greenham, via the Royal Ordnance Factory at Burghfield, which was the final assembly point for Britain’s nuclear weapons. Tens of thousands participated. Other peace camps, some mixed, grew up at other bases, such as Molesworth, Upper Heyford, Fairford, Welford, Burtonwood and Bridgend. 35 Yet more were initiated around the world, in the US, Canada, Australia and Holland. The women remained at Greenham even after the siting of the missiles and stayed until they had finally been removed. Writing in 1985, Caroline Moorehead reported, ‘They have . no intention of leaving; their presence, their witness, is undefeatable. Furthermore there are few surprises left: pigheaded, perhaps, but also courageous, the women have survived four winters; they have been cold, hungry and frightened; repeatedly manhandled by police.’ 36 The courage and commitment of the Greenham women is now legendary, and they continue to be an inspiration to peace activists today.
